Sustainability Foundations: Understanding Sustainability, Emissions & the Path to Net Zero TSN · The Sustainability Network — Training Series, Session 1 of 3
Sustainability is no longer a voluntary commitment. For any organisation operating in the EU, serving EU customers, or participating in a regulated supply chain, it is now a core legal and operational responsibility — governed by binding regulation, scrutinised by capital markets, and expected by an increasing majority of institutional investors.
This course is Session 1 of TSN's three-part training series. It builds the foundational knowledge every professional needs before working with sustainability data, reporting frameworks, or the TSN platform. We start with the why — the history, the science, and the regulatory imperative — before moving to the how.
What you will learn:
Over 25 slides, the course covers six core areas:
- Why sustainability matters today — the convergence of climate risk, investor pressure, and 130+ national regulatory initiatives that makes disclosure unavoidable
- 50 years of sustainability history — from the 1972 Stockholm Conference to the 2023 CSRD, tracing how voluntary good practice became enforceable law
- The three eras of reporting — CSR, ESG, and the current Regulatory Era, and what each means for your organisation's obligations today
- The ESG framework — the Environmental, Social, and Governance dimensions explained clearly, and how TSN measures progress across all three
- Greenhouse gases and carbon footprints — what tCO₂e means, where the 7 GHGs come from, and the step-by-step GHG Protocol calculation process
- Standards and frameworks — navigating GHG Protocol, GRI, CSRD, TCFD, SFDR, EU Taxonomy, and SBTi, and knowing which ones apply to your organisation
- The path to net zero — the 1.5°C carbon budget, the real meaning of net zero vs. carbon neutral, science-based targets, and a six-step roadmap to 2050
Knowledge assessment:
A 50-question multiple-choice assessment is included at the end of the course, covering all topic areas. Questions are randomised on each attempt. The pass mark is 85%. Your score is recorded automatically.
Duration: approximately 45–60 minutes including the assessment.
Available in: 🇬🇧 English · 🇵🇹 Português
Session 2 covers the TSN platform in depth — modules, data connectors, calculations, and audit-ready reporting. Session 3 is a deep dive into Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, the 15 GHG categories, and building your net zero roadmap.

A pontuação é registada automaticamente.
Duração: aproximadamente 45 a 60 minutos, incluindo a avaliação.

Communication and Greenwashing: Credible ESG Communication in a Regulated World
As sustainability reporting becomes legally mandated and regulatory scrutiny intensifies, the way organisations communicate their environmental and social commitments has never been more consequential. Misleading environmental claims — greenwashing — now carry real legal, financial, and reputational risks. This course equips you to recognise those risks, understand the regulatory landscape that governs them, and build the communication practices that protect your organisation.
What you will learn:
Over the course covers eight interconnected areas:
- What greenwashing is — its definition, historical evolution from the 1960s to today, and why the social media era has fundamentally changed the stakes
- The 7 Sins of Greenwashing — Hidden Trade-Off, No Proof, Vagueness, Irrelevance, Lesser of Two Evils, Fibbing, and False Labels — with concrete examples of each
- The regulatory landscape — EU Green Claims Directive, UCPD updates, EU Taxonomy, CSRD double materiality, SFDR Articles 6/8/9, ISO 14020–14025, OECD Guidelines, Paris Agreement, US FTC Green Guides, and UK Green Claims Code
- Risks and consequences — reputational, legal, financial, internal, and sector-wide
- Credible ESG communication — the five principles, the framework for authentic communication, and the three-pillar alignment between ESG policy, SFDR, and marketing
- SFDR and PAI indicators — all 18 mandatory Principal Adverse Impact indicators across environmental (1–9) and social/governance (10–18) dimensions
- Real cases and penalties — Volkswagen Dieselgate (€30B+), H&M Conscious Collection ($4M), Coca-Cola plastics, Ryanair ASA ban, Nestlé water, IKEA timber, HSBC fossil fuel financing, Keurig recyclability ($1.5M), Shell Make the Future, TotalEnergies (October 2025 ruling), and the emerging European enforcement landscape

Digital Product Passport (DPP) — Training Series
The Digital Product Passport is no longer optional. From February 2027, the first mandatory DPP deadline applies to batteries placed on the European market — and ESPR's 2025–2030 Work Plan extends the obligation progressively to textiles, electronics, construction materials, and vehicles.
This course gives participants the foundation to understand what a DPP is, what the law requires, and how TSN's platform supports full compliance and competitive differentiation.
What you will learn:
The course is organised into ten thematic sections across 44 slides:
- What a DPP is and why it is required under ESPR (EU 2024/1781) and the Battery Regulation (EU 2023/1542)
- The EU regulatory timeline and mandatory deadlines by sector
- What a DPP must contain — mandatory fields, operational obligations, and lifecycle data
- The three-layer TSN DPP module architecture: passport management, Product Carbon Footprint (PCF), and circularity
- How access control works across stakeholder profiles — consumer, regulator, value chain partner, and internal team
- PCF calculation methodologies — ISO 14067, GHG Protocol, PACT/WBCSD, and the EU Battery Regulation format
- How Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions map to each phase of a product's lifecycle
- Why verifiable primary data is the antidote to greenwashing under the Green Claims Directive
- The seven DPP management workflows — from product onboarding to continuous update and audit trail
- Real-world passport examples for an EV battery, an organic cotton t-shirt, a DOP cheese, and a photovoltaic panel

The VSME is designed for undertakings that are not in the mandatory scope of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive ('CSRD'). EFRAG's work on the VSME is based on the European Commission's SME Relief Package of September 2023 which refers to this specific standard as a measure to support SMEs in accessing sustainable finance ("EFRAG will develop a voluntary standard for non-listed SMEs. SMEs can use this to standardise the sustainability information they wish to report, creating better opportunities to obtain green financing and thus facilitating the transition to a sustainable economy").
Based on market acceptance, the VSME has been designed to provide a standardised set of information to replace the current multiple and uncoordinated questionnaires and ESG data requests.
The VSME is structured under a Basic Module and a Comprehensive Module. These two modules are expected to fulfil a substantial part of requests from business partners (i.e. banks, investors and large corporates) that SMEs currently receive. The VSME includes disclosures for undertakings across sectors; a few additional data requests cannot be excluded to reflect the specificities of some sectors.
EFRAG is happy to present three educational videos dedicated to the VSME, which was delivered to the European Commission on 17 December 2024.
The three videos cover:
- The highlights and introduction to the VSME: this introductory video provides a glimpse into the objectives, due process, the outcomes of the public consultation, the final VSME structure and the main underlying principles of the standard
- A deep dive into the content of the Basic Module
- A deep dive into the content of the Comprehensive Module along with an explanation of the future planned work for the VSME Ecosystem
